4A beautiful model, with some reservations.Oct 21, 2008
As a model builder, I can appreciate the detail, nice paint work, and overall accuracy of this fire engine. The skinny tires and brass colored fittings stand out nicely and really convey the "old time" look of this engine. It has a nice heft to it and is a bit larger than I expected. It looks good alongside my 1938 Ford fire engine, also by Yat Ming. Overall I am happy with it, but I see some room for improvement. First, while the body of the vehicle is nicely diecast metal, many of the detail parts are plastic (wheels, hose in hose bed, water pump and fittings, etc.). On close examination, I see slight mold lines in some of the plastic parts, which detracts a bit from the overall quality look. Second, under the hood, the engine is nicely detailed, with coolant hose, manifolds, etc well done (but plastic). My nit-pick here is that there is no wiring, not even spark plug wires. Yat Ming is inconsistant in the quality of powerplant detail in its line of fire engine models. Some have poor excuses for an engine block, others are pretty decent like this one, and still others are exceptional with high detailing, plug wiring, and even the battery. The battery box for this model is nicely done and sits on the left running board. Finally, if I look very closely, with the light just right, I can see some areas where the clear glue has oozed out from the attached parts. It is not that noticeable, but it is there. Overall, I would recommend this model to anyone interested in collecting diecast fire engines. With my model building experience I know I am being a little harder in my review of this model than others would be, especially for a mass produced model in this price range. A final thought, attaching the ladder is frustrating, the ladder mounts and ladder are not quite sized to each other, but I got it to work well enough. ADDED: I finally got the ladders mounted right, under the upper brackets instead of over them like my other engines. It took a visit to Fairfield Mint's webpages to find a good photo of the ladders mounted on their model to show me the correct way.
