A nice display model, if you don't look too closely.Oct 29, 2008 I really like the looks of this model. The long, low, wide look contrasts with my 1923 Maxim C1 and my 1938 Ford fire engines. The wide front fenders with vertical lines, the massive chromed grill, and the large chromed bell at the front immediately catch the viewers eyes. The long nose then leads the view back to the rest of the apparatus. The casual observer will really be impressed, but the discerning collector will see some of the same deficiencys associated with Yat Ming's 1:24 scale fire engines in general. The massive power plant is nicely detailed up to a point, but includes no throttle linkage or wiring, not even spark plug wires. The inside of the windshield and the rear window had large fingerprints that I cleaned off with tissue on the end of q-tips. The left headlight was cocked noticeably to the right, but I was able to carefully twist it back and it looks much better. The right spotlight was aimed up and I was able to move it downward to closely match the other spotlight. The siren was cocked back too far, I jiggled it back and forth until it loosened and I was able to remove it, cut off the mounting pin, and super glue it perfectly in place. I should mention here that I have been a model builder as a hobby most of my life, so I do have some experience with what I can fix and what I can't. Also, discrepencies seem to jump out at me so I am more critical than most people, in my opinion. A few things I could not fix: 1). Yat Ming's propensity to use too much plastic! Just about everything attached to the metal body is plastic, which adds some mold seam lines to the model and keeps the model below museum quality. 2). On the right side, some of the pump control levers and knobs are molded into the body instead of being added as separate pieces. It isn't too bad, just something I noticed and a change from my other fire engines where nearly every detail is a separate piece added to the model. 3). The paint is nice but has an occassional small defect (perhaps a small dust mote gets painted over here and there?). The painted pinstriping is accepable, but not quite as good as my other two models. 4). The biggest problem I have is the right door does not close correctly. I have to jiggle it around to close it and it is a loose fit when closed. I will get past this by leaving both doors open. In conclusion, this really is an eye-catching model that will please most collectors. For the relatively low price I paid, it can't be beat. Just don't be disappointed to find it is not perfect.
