When I ordered this I didn't realize it was plastic. It also does not have a light built in so you have to use the mirror under the slide to reflect the light to see the slide. If I had known this I would not have ordered this one.

I guess I missed the description on this- it is quite small. There is no light source. Your child needs to be able to manipulate a refractory glass just right to put the specimen in view. My son is happy with it, but I was a little disappointed. He is 7 and quite capable, but he struggles to line it all up and has to move all over the house to find the right sunlight. Also, if he just nudges it while trying to look, he has to re-adjust. I would have returned it, but he did not want to wait for another.

This kit is perfect for kids, everything the little scientist needs to get started on their own experiments. This microscope is for beginners, but a great deal for the price.

We bought this for our niece for Christmas. Her grandfather bought her a more expensive set as well. To no avail, she and her grandfather (who is a science teacher) sat up till 2am trying to figure how to use the expensive set while she was able to start viewing slides and bugs within 15 minutes of opening this one. Nothing extravagant but a good buy for the price!
