Features markings Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's F4U-1A Corsair¨, decorated with 20 small Japanese Rising Sun flags (representing 20 aerial victories) and adorned with the nickname Lulubelle. This particular aircraft was used only for a photo opp, but is remembered for itÕs recognition of this ace fighter who later commanded the famous U.S. Marine Corps squadron, VMF-214 ("The Black Sheep Squadron") during World War II. Interesting Facts The F4U was designed as a carrier based fighter at the request of the US Navy in 1938. The most distinctive feature of the F4U is arguably the gull-winged or Òbent-wingÓ airframe design which helped pull the most powerful engine available at the time. The F4U was a legendary fighter during World War II. With its supercharged engine it made a whistling sound that garnered the nickname ÒWhistling DeathÓ and with its positive kill rate of 11:1 it was a highly feared and respected aircraft.
