Product Description Highly detailed 1/48 scale desktop model of the F4U Corsair¨. Features markings Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's F4U-1A Corsair¨, decorated with 20 small Japanese Rising Sun flags (representing 20 aerial victories) and adorned with the nickname Lulubelle. This particular aircraft was used only for a photo opp, but is remembered for itÕs recognition of this ace fighter who later commanded the famous U.S. Marine Corps squadron, VMF-214 ("The Black Sheep Squadron") during World War II. Model includes display stand and educational collectorÕs card. Officially licensed model in collaboration with the curators of the Smithsonian Institution. Interesting Facts The F4U was designed as a carrier based fighter at the request of the US Navy in 1938. The most distinctive feature of the F4U is arguably the gull-winged or Òbent-wingÓ airframe design which helped pull the most powerful engine available at the time. The F4U was a legendary fighter during World War II. With its supercharged engine it made a whistling sound that garnered the nickname ÒWhistling DeathÓ and with its positive kill rate of 11:1 it was a highly feared and respected aircraft. Manufactured by Vought, the F4U Corsair resulted in the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history. Top Speed: 425 mph Number Built: 12,571

2Not as good as the others.Jan 01, 2011
By Zach
I have several of the Smithsonian's other 1:48 scale WWII planes, and all have been very good quality, but the Corsair was not as good. The props were bent (had to straigten them out), the landing gear was so loose it almost fell out (tightened it up, but still), and the proppeller and engine were blue like the rest of the plane (should be black). I'm not sure if this is typical of all Corsairs from this manufacturer, or if it was just a fluke, but it should be noted.

5Not a toyFeb 09, 2010

This item is more a collector's item than a "toy". It's very nice, well-built, and my husband loves it. He has a collection of 6 WWII planes now and they look great on the shelves.
