Great little train set.Jan 05, 2010
By Felicia A. Reed I bought this train set because my two year old likes trains. I didn't want to spend too much money since I have no idea if this interest is going to last. I also wanted a set that I could let him play with without worrying about something getting broken. This train set fills those needs perfectly. I have set this train up and taken it down numerous times now and have had no problems. The track goes together easily and the train runs fine on carpet without falling over. If you are considering buying this train keep in mind that it is plastic and battery operated. Realism is not the name of the game here. It also has two or three sounds that it plays over and over again with no option for running the train without the sound. Not a problem for me but something to consider depending on your needs.

Not just a toyJul 01, 2009
By Weiming Zhang Yes, it's a model, even for adults. You can easily extend it by adding additonal HO scale train tracks. I love it. My son loves it.
Forget about the wood train set, they are not real. Check the wheel and track you'll find the difference. Your son can't learn from the wood train set what the real train is.

Could have been a lot of fun!Nov 17, 2010
By N. Gopal
My son loved the train lights and sound, and when it was on the tracks, it was fun. But aligning the wheels on the tracks and connecting the cars is a challenge for an adult, leave alone kids. Whoever designed this needs a basic introduction to kid motor skills. It cannot be this hard to design something that sits on the track better.
The position of the on-off switch is TERRIBLE! Once the train is seated on the track, switching it on causes the engine to jump off the rails. So it takes some real deft handling to switch it on or off.
I guess the price reflects all these issues!

Easy set up and great fun for a 4 year old who tries to get into my Lionel during Christmas time which I put around the tree. Easy to put the train on the tracks.

By KKN I bought two trains, one steam engine with a passenger car and another one, which has a diesel engine with an oil tanker. Both had the same price and this review is for both of them.
I got this toy for my 5 year old son. Arranged the track and turned on the diesel engine and it did not move even an inch. Then opened the other pack that had the steam engine and that worked well. The diesel engine's wheels turned only if you hold the engine in your hand at it stopped the moment you keep it on the track or on any surface where the wheels touch something. I disassembled it and found that the motor's drive shaft moves forward when there is any little load on the wheel and when it is in that forward position, it just stops turning. Then I used a small piece of plastic to hold that drive shaft in position, by stopping it from moving forward and it worked! Already the toy made a lot of noise from its speaker and now my fix makes extra noise, but it works!
The steam engine has better looking grips on its drive wheels. So, it works well. However, the diesel engine has some kind of a rubber band around the drive wheel to stop the wheels from slipping instead of pulling the train. That looked very cheap and as expected, one of them started coming out of the wheel and soon the other one also followed. So, the train runs for a while and then would stop after these two come out of the wheel. I fixed that too by glueing those rubber bands on to the wheel to stop them from coming out.
If you are buying this toy as a stationary model train, it is good. But if you are thinking of buying it as a running model, then this is not the one for that. The plastic is so delicate that if you apply a little pressure on top of the train, the axle might break, although it hasn't happened with mine yet. The steam engine runs fine, but the coupling (what allows you to join the passenger car) broke in a week's time. I fixed it with the super glue and don't know for how long it is going to stand.
There are no straight tracks in the pack. So all what you could make is a perfect circle. I used the tracks from both the packs and made one big round track that's kind of elliptical. It is permanently fixed like that, because I feel if you keep dismantling the tracks and join them every time you want to play, it may not stay in shape for long, because the things that keep two tracks joined together may not stand for long.
